The Temminck’s Tragopan Pheasants (tragopan temminickii) are native to Eastern India, Southern and Central Asia, and Central China. Temminck’s Tragopan Pheasants are horned birds with short bills, and tail feathers that are shorter than the wings. Female Temminck’s Tragopan Pheasants are more drab in coloring to help provide camouflage, with a mixture of gray, black, and brown. Male Temminck’s Tragopan Pheasants are much more brilliant in color with brownish-red plumage that have an ocelli (a marking that resembles an eye, like on the tail feathers of a male peacock) underneath, and large eyespots that are surrounded by black borders. Each individual feather is gray and with a brilliant red border. The male Tragopan has blue skin on its face and a bib-like area on its throat. These are extremely hardy birds. They are easy to keep, and need a medium to large size aviary. They like high perches and elevated nest boxes.
